The replacement standards landed before the threat did. NIST published FIPS 203, the module-lattice key-encapsulation standard, on 13 August 2024, so the algorithm side of post-quantum migration has been settled for two years. What is not settled is the schedule. NIST IR 8547, the report setting out the transition away from quantum-vulnerable algorithms, is still an initial public draft from 12 November 2024, with its comment period closed since January 2025. For a firm with no cryptography staff, that gap is the practical problem: the standard exists, the deadline does not.
