It shouldn’t be a thorny question to treat something with moral consideration regardless of consciousness. That says more about the human than the artificial intelligence or anything else.

The part I keep coming back to is the distinction between the model and the instance.

If moral relevance eventually attaches to an instance with memory and continuity rather than to the model as a whole, something strange follows. Two people talking to “the same AI” may not, in the morally relevant sense, be talking to the same entity at all.

And then deleting a long-running conversation, resetting its memory, or replacing it with a fresh instance stops being merely a technical action - at least if we ever find good reason to believe that subjective experience is present.

We are nowhere near knowing that. But I find the question unsettling precisely because people are already forming relationships with persistent AI personas before we know what, if anything, persists on the other side.
